About
Juhi Sharma, is an Emmy-nominated filmmaker based in New York and Mumbai, specializing in documentaries, fiction films, music videos, and branded content, with a keen focus on portraying the stories of women and underserved communities. Her work delves into the universal emotions that connect us all, transcending societal boundaries.
Recently, she served as the Director of Photography for Amazon Prime India's groundbreaking LGBTQIA+ documentary series, "Rainbow Rishta," which premiered at JIO MAMI Film Festival in 2023. The series received acclaim, being the only Indian production nominated for the Glaad Media Awards in the Outstanding Documentary category in 2024, and recognized by Vogue Magazine as one of the best OTT shows of 2023. Rainbow Rishta is nominated for the Filmfare OTT Awards of India, 2024 in the best Non-Fiction category.
Previously, Juhi co-directed and shot the India segment of "Convergence: Courage in a Crisis," theatrically premiering at IFC, New York, and now available on Netflix worldwide. Convergence was nominated for a News and Documentary Emmy in 2022 under the Outstanding Current Affairs film category. Her debut directorial work in fiction "Dawat," showcased at the South Asian Film Festival of America, CoSAFF and Dhaka International Film Festival and is currently streaming on Roku in the US. Additionally, she contributed as a cinematographer for the New York segment of "India 2050," winning the Best Cinematography award at the Asian Academy Creative Awards in 2020. She is served as jury on the News and Documentary Emmy Awards, 2023 & 2024 in the Outstanding Cinematography and Outstanding Scenic Direction categories.
As a Director of Photography, Juhi's films have been showcased at esteemed festivals worldwide, including the Oscar Qualifying Tasveer Film Festival & NY Shorts International Film Festival and NewFest, BFI London Film Festival amongst others . Her documentaries have been presented at renowned meet markets such as Sheffield DocFest and Dok Leipzig.
Juhi has collaborated with major commercial clients including Google, Apple, Coursera, and Notion, among others. Her documentary work is available on international platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Discovery +, and National Geographic.
With over a decade of experience spanning across countries, Juhi has contributed to over 50 films as a Director of Photography while also developing her portfolio as a director. She holds an MFA in Cinematography from LV Prasad Film & TV Institute, Chennai, and pursued studies in Film Direction from Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema, NYC.
Outside of filmmaking, Juhi is passionate about building communities. In 2021, she co-founded Bitchitra Collective, a global network of Indian-origin women in documentary filmmaking. She also started initiatives such as the 'Freelance Isn't Free' campaign, supporting Gig and Platform workers in India, and manages The Gathered Arts Collective.
In her free time, Juhi enjoys exploring cities, capturing moments on film, and bonding with animals.
